6 Indoor Air Quality Myths You Need To Stop Believing

Indoor air quality is a topic often surrounded by myths and misconceptions, leading many homeowners to misunderstand what truly affects the air they breathe. In this blog, we will debunk common myths about indoor air quality, providing you with clear, accurate information so you can better create a healthier living environment in your household.

  1. Indoor Air Is Always Cleaner Than Outdoor Air. One of the most common misconceptions is that the air inside our homes is cleaner than the air outside. However, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA),  indoor air can be up to five times more polluted than outdoor air. This is due to a combination of factors, including inadequate ventilation, the presence of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from paints and cleaning products, and other pollutants that accumulate indoors.
  2. Air Fresheners Improve Air Quality. Many people turn to air fresheners to enhance the air quality in their homes. This is a myth; air fresheners only mask odors and can emit harmful chemicals that contribute to indoor air pollution. Instead, focus on eliminating the source of odors and improving indoor ventilation by changing your HVAC filters or asking a reliable indoor air quality expert whether you need to install an air purifier in your home.
  3. Mold Is Only a Concern in Humid Climates. Another common myth is that mold growth is only a problem in areas with high humidity. While mold prefers moist environments, it can grow in any home where there is moisture. Whether it’s due to plumbing leaks, inadequate ventilation or high humidity, it’s crucial to control moisture levels indoors to prevent mold growth. Investing in a humidity control solution, like a humidifier or dehumidifier, is a good place to start.
  4. “Green” Cleaning Products Are Always Safe. The rising trend of using “green” or “natural” cleaning products comes with the misconception that they are inherently safe for IAQ. While some products may be less harmful, not all are free from VOCs and other harmful chemicals. Always check the labels and opt for products certified by reputable organizations to ensure they are truly safe for indoor use.
  5. HVAC Filters Don’t Need Regular Replacement. There’s a belief that the filters in HVAC systems can last indefinitely without needing a change. On the contrary, regular filter maintenance is critical for maintaining clean air indoors. Dirty filters not only degrade your HVAC system’s efficiency but also circulate pollutants within your indoor air.
  6. Indoor Air Quality Isn’t a Serious Health Concern. Underestimating the impact of poor IAQ on health is a dangerous misconception. Poor indoor air can lead to a range of health problems from respiratory issues to headaches and even long-term diseases. Exposure within weeks can increase the respiratory symptoms of older adults and people already enduring breathing and lung-related issues.
