Even top-quality HVAC systems have to be checked on a regular basis in order to keep them running smoothly and efficiently. In some cases, maintenance requires more than just checking for clean air filters and coils. Today, our HVAC installation experts talk about what happens during an HVAC tune-up.
Coolant and pressure check. The first things that an HVAC technician will check during a tune-up are the coolant levels and pressure. If there’s a significant decrease in coolant levels, this could mean that there’s a leak somewhere or some of the coolant is stuck due to a clog or kink. A pressure check also confirms if there are any damages along the pipes and seals.
Thermostat calibration. In some cases, the thermostat can get out of sync with the HVAC system, resulting in inaccurate readings and poor energy efficiency. This is usually done by power cycling both the HVAC system and the thermostat. HVAC and furnace installation experts may also perform repairs in case the thermostat can’t be calibrated by simple means.
Electrical check. HVAC units have a lot of wires and circuits that could be damaged by wear and tear. This means the technician must check all the wires for signs of peeling or fraying. They should also check for bent or chipped capacitors, as well as make sure the screws securing the circuit boards are tightened properly.
Cleaning and lubrication. Once everything is properly tuned up, all that’s left is to clean up the HVAC unit. HVAC and heat pump installation experts will make sure that the coils and drain pans are free of mold to prevent condensate from pooling up. Dirt from the filter (indoors) and the fan and fins (outdoors) will also need to be washed away.
