The Importance of Matching Your Air Conditioning Coils

Both residential and commercial HVAC units encounter issues that often originate from either the condenser coil or the evaporator coil. Most homeowners, and at times, even contractors, choose to simply replace what’s defective. However, this can lead to even worse problems if the replacement coil doesn’t precisely match the original. Here we break down some of the reasons why it’s critical to match air conditioning coils in this article.

Understanding Condenser & Evaporator Coils

The evaporator coil can be found near the air handler inside your home. As liquid refrigerant flows into the evaporator coil through the expansion valve, its pressure rapidly drops, causing the refrigerant to become colder. Meanwhile, the condensing coil is equipped to allow the refrigerant to shed the heat it absorbed while inside its coil counterpart.

What Happens When the Coils Are Mismatched

  • Increased energy costs. Should these coils be mismatched in size, the smaller coils won’t be able to keep up with the overall capacity of the larger ones. This will force the whole system to run for longer periods of time, prompting higher utility bills.
  • Reduced comfort. The humidity and temperature of your living spaces can increase if your condenser and evaporator coils aren’t equal in size. Thus your system may excel at dehumidifying your home if the evaporator coils are larger but won’t cool your home effectively, and the larger evaporator coils won’t remove excess moisture in the air. Immediately check your HVAC maintenance contracts to have this problem fixed.
  • Shorter equipment lifespan. Mismatched components will put a strain on your unit. You could end up paying for costly repairs if this doesn’t get repaired quickly.
