Self-Check: How’s Your Commercial HVAC System?

An efficient HVAC system is essential to the comfort of your building and the smooth operation of your business. Regular inspections ensure it stays in good shape and continues to perform well. Routine checks also go a long way in prolonging the lifespan of your equipment.

Here’s how to check your commercial heating and air conditioning system.

Are the Thermostat Settings Correct?

Check if your thermostat is in the right setting. The temperature of your living space should be suitable for your current needs. You might need to adjust it seasonally or with changes in occupancy.

Are the Filters Replaced?

One of the easiest ways to maintain good HVAC performance and save on heating repair costs is regular air filter replacements. How frequently you need to do the task depends on the type of filter you have and the unique needs of your household. For instance, you might need to replace air filters more often if someone in the family has asthma or allergies.

Are There Debris on the Evaporator Coils?

Dirt, dust and other debris can clog evaporator coils. They will restrict airflow and cause poor system performance. You can easily avoid this issue by having evaporator coils cleaned regularly.

Are the Condenser Coils Clean?

Another system component that must remain clean is the condenser coils. Allowing debris to build up can result in inefficiency and even failure.

Have You Checked the Fan Belts and Motors?

Look for signs of wear and tear on the fan belts and motors. If they have damage, be sure to replace them immediately.

Are Refrigerant Levels Checked?

Your commercial HVAC system must remain at the manufacturer-recommended level to perform efficiently. If not, your equipment might malfunction or fail prematurely.

Are Electrical Connections Intact?

Signs of corrosion or wear on your HVAC system’s electrical connections are things you must address immediately. They can cause your equipment to become inefficient or fail.

Is the Air Distribution System Balanced?

Uneven air distribution can cause discomfort inside your building. It can also cause your equipment to work harder than it should, increasing energy costs.
