3 Reasons Why Your Air Conditioner Isn’t Cooling Properly

HVAC systems are essential to every household, especially when temperatures are very hot or cold. During the summer, a faulty AC that isn’t cooling your space properly is a significant problem. If this happens to you, be sure to call your local HVAC maintenance contract specialist for help identifying the issue.

Today’s article from Perfect Degree HVAC discusses three reasons why your HVAC system may not be cooling properly.

Clogged air filters. One of the most common reasons behind cooling issues is dirty air filters, which can cause airflow and thermostat problems. Clogged air filters have excessive debris and pollutants, which can create a health risk that needs to be addressed immediately. Moreover, dirty air filters can also make your air conditioner’s evaporator coil freeze, preventing cool air from passing through the system. Luckily, most air filters can easily be cleaned or replaced by homeowners. If you’re anxious about opening your air conditioner, then it’s best to call in experts to do the job.

Dirty outdoor unit. Your unit’s air filters aren’t the only ones susceptible to getting dirty and clogged. Residential and commercial HVAC systems typically have outdoor units that also need to be properly maintained and inspected. If your AC isn’t properly cooling, there might be a problem with the evaporator, condenser or both. Dealing with these two components is best left to the experts, but you can help simply by cleaning the outdoor unit itself. Remove weeds and obstructions from it and give it space by clearing out objects that can hinder proper air intake.

Insufficient refrigerant. Refrigerant is the blood of the air conditioner and is necessary for effective cooling. It saps the heat from the surrounding air and allows your air conditioner to blow cold air into your spaces. If your HVAC system has run out of refrigerant, it won’t be able to cool your rooms effectively. There are two possible reasons why you’ve run out of refrigerant. One is that your HVAC system is old and has simply run out of refrigerant. The other is that you probably have leaks in your HVAC system. Leaks can easily be identified by hissing or bubbling sounds or a visible buildup of ice on the outdoor unit.
